Fort Kochi, Kerala, India

Located on the west coast of India, Fort Kochi is the original settlement of Kochi city. Today, one of India’s quintessential tourist sites, Fort Kochi’s economy focused on fishing, coir, and spices. Only fishing survived the transition to a tourist economy. The original fisher communities have moved with the fish and settled on the southwest of the island and surrounding islands to the north. Adapting to the vagaries of climate change, besides selling their fish, the fisher community has expanded its livelihood options. During the lean periods, they work as street vendors, travelling salespersons, or domestic help on the mainland.
