Ga-Mashie, Accra, Ghana

Located on the west coast of Africa, Ga-Mashie is the original settlement of Ghana’s capital, Accra. Home to the Ga people, Ga-Mashie also serves as a historical marker of Ghana’s independence. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president campaigned from his jail cell in James Fort, and won. Post-independence, what was once traditional became informal. Today Ga-Mashie is home to the fisher community whose women vend on the streets of Accra.
